DREAM THEATER
ОVЕRТURЕ 1928
МЕТRОРОLIS pt 2
Here's the tab to the Оvеrтurе. I've added a new element, that ASCII tabs
have always (almost) lacked - rhythm indication. In case of the slow or
rhythm guitar parts the timing could be easily guessed just by listening to
the recording, when it came to playing some fast and tricky runs the tabs
were practically useless (uless you had a steady rhythm, say 16th notes).
You just knew to play a series of notes, 'fast'. If you want to practice
with a slower tempo, say with a metronome, you have no idea of how the notes
are spaced within a measure. You have to analyze the recording, which means
that you have to do the transcription again, yourself. Besides that, I think
it helps a lot to be aware of the actual rhythm.
So the result is below, the tab is a little more crowded, but you now get
the whole picture. (at least the part I managed to make out :) The rhythm
indications are fairly straightforward, an explanation is at the end of
this file, along with the tab explanation. Enjoy, and tell me what you think!
As an overture, this song has a lot of parts from other songs on the album,
I indicated those connections which I noticed.
Tempo is around 112 BPM.
Bridge pickup, distortion.
Some arpeggiated chords, let ring throughout. (Still distorted) The
This guitar part appears later in Оnе Last Time and Strange Deja Vu
This section is later referred to as Rhy Fig. 1
Now, the keyboard solo. The guitar plays the riff (slightly modified
here and there) :
At this point another distorted guitar enters playing a familiar melody,
The melody and chord progression are of course reminiscent of Metropolis
pt. 1 and appear later in Home.
returns in Оnе Last Time (2:03), with some wild modifications, though.
Rhy Fig. 1 is repeated here, doubled with an acoustic guitar. After that,
the lead guitar returns with another melody (bridge pickup again). The
rhythm guitar plays again the power chords indicated. The chord
progression used here is the main progression in Оnе Last Time and also
single chords, I placed the chord symbols directly above the corresponding
melody notes.
Here, a second guitar harmonizes the melody a third up. I notated it above
the first guitar part.
Now the rhythm guitar stops playing chords and doubles the lead an
octave below. This part is notated below the lead guitar part.
Here, the part leading directly into Strang Deja Vu begins. The same riff
...at this point Strange Deja Vu begins.
RHYTHM NОТАТОN:
Most of the symbols try to look like regular notes. Rests are indicated
